For any young person struggling with home life, school or feeling like a failure and not achieving potential goals can lead to other overwhelming emotional difficulties. It can lead to social or academic issues that will only get worse by ignoring them.

Imagine you are a child or young person who suffers this and it is completely out of your control? Doing your best but feeling like a failure?

A diagnosis can really help our children, young people, family, friends and our schools understand the reasons behind your diagnosis.

We can put strategies and plans in place that will brighten up the future for our young people and help them achieve their best.

FAQs

Who does the Assessment? A joint assessment is undertaken by Dr Joe Clarke, Consultant Paediatrician and Ms Julie Conwell, ADHD Nurse Specialist.

How soon can I get an appointment? Our aim is to begin the assessment process within 8 weeks of the full payment being received. The waiting times for the service will be discussed when you make an initial appointment.

Are there any forms to be completed? We require ●Registration form (general information, contact details, health history etc) for the child being assessed ●Conners form to be completed by parents, teachers and child (if they are over 9 years old) ●Teachers report form.

What age does the child need to be to be assessed? Children need to be 6 years of age before an assessment will be undertaken by the Northwest ADHD Assessment Centre.

What will happen after the assessment? After the assessment you will receive a clinic letter which will detail the assessment, the initial outcome and if appropriate suggested treatment plan. We will forward completed electronic reports within two to four weeks. The family will also receive a range of resources and information in relation to ADHD. The written report will be forwarded between six and eight weeks after assessment date. We will also make contact with School should medication be considered.

Can you prescribe ADHD medication? Yes, if your child is diagnosed with ADHD and medication is appropriate and something you wish to try, we can prescribe. If your child or family history highlights cardiac concerns we would require you to have some blood tests and an ECG done to check for any underlying conditions that may contraindicate anything we prescribe. These tests can normally be done via your GP or at a private clinic if you prefer. We don’t have the facilities to carry out these tests at the ADHD Centre.

Can I take my letter to my GP and will they prescribe? Most GP’s are more than happy to prescribe ADHD medication; however, they normally require you to be started on your medication by your private consultant. Once you are settled on a medication and dose, we can then ask your GP to take over prescribing under a Shared Care Agreement. Under the terms of the Shared Care Agreement you would need to come back to the ADHD Centre for a review every 6 months. We would request that you confirm your GP will prescribe prior to commencing the assessment process.

Do you offer any discounts or payment plans? We do not offer discounts but we would be very happy to discuss payment plans prior to the initial assessment.

Will my diagnosis be recognised by Schools/Educational Authority/GPs? As the assessment follows NICE guidelines and the diagnosis is provided by a Consultant Paediatrician with specialist training and an ADHD Nurse Specialist there is no reason why this will not be recognised by a school, college or your GP. If you have any concerns we suggest you check beforehand with your school or college the information they will require.

Will my child be eligible for extra support at school? The ADHD Clinicians will note any reasonable adjustments they feel necessary for school, college or university in your assessment letter, however this will be at the discretion of the school or college to provide these adjustments.

What if I’m diagnosed with something other than ADHD? Whilst our assessments are specifically to diagnose ADHD our clinicians are trained in neurodevelopment and will be able to offer suggestions or further diagnoses for symptoms which may be contributing to your current difficulties. Please note onward referral to other services may be suggested.
